Google ramps up fight against inappropriate content

For instance, Wojcicki says that YouTube will have 10,000 people working to address questionable content by 2018 - noting that human reviewers are essential to training the company's machine learning systems.

Wojcicki says that YouTube is taking lessons learned from the first wave of the Adpocalypse - which was ultimately triggered by violent and extremist content - and applying them to tackle other forms of problematic content (as well as video comments), including those that pose child safety concerns and feature hate speech.

"Now, we are applying the lessons we've learned from our work fighting violent extremism content over the past year in order to tackle other problematic content", Wojcicki wrote. It's already used to remove violent extremist videos.

The New York Times claimed some parents discovered in November violent content was slipping past the YouTube Kids filter, which led to heightened scrutiny on the service.

The move comes a month after YouTube closed 50 channels that target young viewers with inappropriate content, including Toy Freaks, and deleted thousands of videos that combined received tens of billions of views. There was also a conspiracy-theory video that came up in a YouTube search a day after the October Las Vegas shooting that killed dozens. It's unclear, however, how the expansion of moderators announced on Monday might impact this kind of content, since YouTube said it was focused on hate speech and child safety.

YouTube aims to bring around 10,000 more people by 2018 to review content that violates the company's policies, outlined Susan Wojcicki, CEO of YouTube in a blog post published on December 4. Wojcicki claimed that advances in the technology allowed the site to take down almost 70% of violent extremist content within eight hours of it being uploaded.

Wojcicki said YouTube was taking a "new approach to advertising", with more manual curation, stricter criteria for videos eligible to show ads, and a greater number of ad reviewers.

YouTube plans to hire more people to scour its website for violent videos after reports about disturbing footage on its app for children surfaced last month, prompting a slew of advertisers to abandon the site.
