NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell Reportedly Inks Contract Extension

Roger Goodell Reportedly Signs Contract Extension to Remain NFL Commissioner

Despite opposition from one of the league's most powerful owners, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell has signed a new contract, according to multiple reports.

The dispute between the commissioner and Jones stems from Goodell's decision to suspend Cowboys running back Ezekiel Elliott, who had been accused of domestic violence by a former girlfriend.

The deal will reportedly be worth about $40 million over the five years, according to the Washington Post.

The letter stated "nearly unanimous consensus among the ownership in favor of signing the contract extension now".

Pro Football Talk was the first to report that the Committee officially extending Goodell's contract on Wednesday. Our Committee unanimously supports the contract and believes that it is fully consistent with "market" compensation and the financial and other parameters outlined to the owners at our May 2017 meeting, as well as in the best interests of ownership. The Cowboys owner initially threatened to sue the NFL to block the deal, arguing that the league's compensation committee had misled owners about its terms. Questions about the likelihood of an extension also followed the debate over NFL player protests during the national anthem earlier this year. Goodell will earn a guaranteed annual salary of $3.5 million, though he could earn as much as $50 million through incentives, sources told FOX Business senior correspondent Charles Gasparino.

Jones had been removed as a non-voting seventh member of the compensation committee after his threat of a lawsuit.

A number of owners backed Jones in his stance against Goodell, but ultimately, Goodell had enough backing from most of the owners to get a deal done.
