Oakland Raiders To Pursue Jon Gruden, Offer Him Ownership Stake

Raiders QB Derek Carr on Jack Del Rio firing'It hurts

Gruden coached the Raiders from 1998-2001, or the last time that they were a consistently competitive team, and owner Mark Davis has maintained a good relationship with the analyst of ESPN's "Monday Night Football", per Schefter.

ESPN's Adam Schefter and Chris Mortensen reported the Raiders will pursue Gruden, who won't be headed to Tampa Bay after the Buccaneers committed to Dirk Koetter for at least on more season.

Gruden "would prefer not to make any decisions until the regular season finishes Sunday", though. Gruden's contract even could be backloaded to pay him more in the Nevada years of the deal and lessen his tax burden during the California years.

"I don't want to sit here and speculate", Gruden told the network.

Gruden did not directly comment on the report when he was quoted in the story.

Ever since Gruden's name emerged as a candidate to return to the job he held from 2002 through 2008, there has been no definitive statement from Gruden or from his current employer that he's not leaving.

He now serves as the color commentator during the Monday Night Football telecast, a job he has insisted he is happy in. I take a lot every year from coaches, some others. His teams missed the playoffs in five of the 11 seasons he coached and after his first year in Tampa (where he won a Super Bowl), the Bucs fell short of expectations every campaign. Guys want to bounce ideas off me.

It appears that the Oakland Raiders really want ESPN color commentator Jon Gruden to be back with their organization. "I'm here to help people".

"The owner", one source said about Davis, "has an affinity for him". There's already talk that ESPN has tried to squeeze Gruden to accept a lesser deal. Others predicted Gruden would wind up with the Raiders. This year, there are many sources who believe the Raiders are preparing to make another offer so enticing that it will be hard for Gruden to turn down.
