President Trump Was Named Time's "Runner-Up" Person Of The Year

The #MeToo movement represents a broad range of people mostly women who made public their sexual harassment experience

The magazine dubbed the group "silence breakers," devoting the cover to people like actress Ashley Judd, who spawned the public string of sexual harassment and assault allegations against film tycoon Harvey Weinstein.

"The 2017 person of the year is the silence breakers, the voices that launched a movement", Time editor-in-chief Edward Felsenthal said today in making the announcement on NBC News' "Today" show.

"The reckoning appears to have sprung up overnight".

Trump claimed last month that the magazine told him he was the likely victor for the second consecutive year, which Time later disputed.

"These silence breakers have started a revolution of refusal, gathering strength by the day, and in the past two months alone, their collective anger has spurred immediate and shocking results: almost every day, CEOs have been fired, moguls toppled, icons disgraced".

Who were the Person of the Year runners-up?

Chinese President Xi Jinping came in third.

Felsenthal called the #MeToo movement the "fastest moving social change we've seen in decades".

The hashtag, which rose to prominence this year after actor Alyssa Milano tweeted about it, was originally started by Tarana Burke ten years ago. "But it began, as great social change almost always does, with individual acts of courage". At least 50 prominent men have been accused of sexual misconduct in recent weeks, according to the Associated Press. Pop star Taylor Swift is also featured on the cover, since she faced criticism and backlash when she called out her harasser earlier this year.. Her testimony was widely covered. Swift famously took a radio host to court this year for groping her and won. In the end, however, it was women who made a firm stance against sexual harassment and assault won it.

Isabel Pascual, a woman from Mexico who picks strawberries for a living, (whose name has been changed to protect her identity) was stalked and harassed and threatened that her children will be harmed if she spoke out - but she did so, nonetheless.

While originally started by African American activist Tarana Burke 10 years ago, the current #MeToo movement has been credited to actress Alyssa Milano, who tweeted on October 15 - 10 days after the New York Times article ran - that if every woman who had been sexually harassed or assaulted wrote "Me too" as their status, it might give others a sense of the problem's magnitude.
