Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, to run for re-election in Utah, causing some to speculate the president wants to block former Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney from seeking election for the seat, Politico reported Sunday.

U.S. President Donald Trump is greeted by Sen. Trump later thanked Hatch on Twitter saying, "Let's continue to make America great again!"

"I've gotten to know a lot of people very well", the president said in introductory remarks focused on Hatch during a Salt Lake City speech about national monuments.

The report stated in more recent times, Hatch also played a pivotal role in passing Trump's tax reform bill through the Senate. Their suspicions are warranted: Trump has sounded off to friends about how he doesn't like the idea of a Senator Romney, Politico reports.

The president's motives aren't hard to discern: retaining Hatch would allow Trump to keep an ally close while spurning Romney, his onetime presidential primary opponent who remains a vocal critic, and who would in theory prove a much less obliging Congressman.

Politico reported Sunday that Trump is going all out to persuade Hatch to seek re-election in no small part to prevent his longtime nemesis, Romney, from winning the seat.

Romney has reportedly been mulling a Senate bid in Utah for some time, taking steps after the new year and last summer to up his presence in the Utah political scene.

According to Trump deputies, the president's relationship with Hatch began before Romney planned of being Utah's senator.

Trump called Hatch "a very special man" on Monday.

Romney has been public about his disagreements with Trump and is a key figure in the Never Trump movement, while Hatch was an early supporter of Trump during the 2016 campaign and has since defended Trump's presidency. "He gets a free ride to the White House and all we get is a lousy hat", he added. Later, when Trump assumed office, he floated Romney as a potential candidate for Secretary of State, but snubbed him in favor of former Exxon C.E.O.

Romney was planning to run for the position held by Hatch, on the assumption the senator would retire, according to a report by Politico.

Breitbart editor in chief and former Trump advisor Steven Bannon also is reportedly trying to keep Romney from running for Senate in his effort to keep establishment Republicans out of Washington.
