Why and When Hugh Jackman Turned Down James Bond

NEW YORK-Hugh Jackman has become an undeniable Wolverine for X-Men fans, yet there was a chance that he could've played Bond instead.

The 49-year-old star said he believed scripts of the movies needed to become "grittier" then and replacing Pierce Brosnan as Agent 007 would be too much on his plate as he was going to reprise his part as the adamantium-clawed mutant in the X-Men film franchise soon. However, the actor felt the franchise wasn't gritty enough at the time and chose to opt out of portraying James Bond.

"And the response was: 'Oh, you don't get a say".

"I was also anxious that between Bond and X-Men, I'd never have time to do different things", he said.

"I was offered a job on Neighbours, which was a very successful soap opera in Australia at the time the same weekend I was offered a place at the West Australian Academy of Performing Arts which was a prestigious drama school", he said.

Ultimately the role went to British actor Daniel Craig, who starred as James Bond in the 2006 flick Casino Royale before continuing the role for three more movies including 2012's Skyfall andSpectre in 2015. "It felt a little bit claustrophobic", he said. And it seems that our home-bred Hugh Jackman piqued their interest, having just begun playing Wolverine in the 2000 hit X-Men.

The actor sings, dances and tries to embody all the larger-than-life pizazz that made the circus owner "the greatest showman".

While the role would undoubtedly made Jackman millions more, it's not the first time he's turned down an iconic role because it wasn't the right fit for him.
