1700 jobs at risk as Tesco simplifies operations

Staff cuts on the cards at Tesco

Tesco is cutting 800 jobs within the business in a bid to simplify its operations.

The roles of compliance manager and "people manager" will be axed from its larger stores and fulfilment centres, reports the Mirror.

Tesco set out a plan in October 2016 to reduce operating costs by 1.5 billion pounds ($2.1 billion) over three years through efficiencies in its distribution network and stores and from procurement savings. The role of customer experience manager, present in 226 stores, will also be removed, giving line managers more direct accountability for customer service.

Tesco said it would try to find alternative roles for the 1,700 staff affected "wherever possible".

At the beginning of past year, it also culled 1,600 deputy store manager roles in its smaller stores, with junior staff left to pick up the slack. The move comes after Britain's biggest grocer recently updated investors on its performance, revealing a rise in sales during the third quarter of its financial year and the crucial Christmas period.

Northern Ireland's biggest retailer has around 55 stores here.

However, the results also showed Tesco was hit by a continued slowdown in general merchandise sales and troubles caused by the collapse of Palmer & Harvey.

The cuts will be made both in the United Kingdom and in the group's global business.

Tesco is to cut 1,700 jobs from its branches and warehouses as part of its turnaround strategy for the company.

Last year, Tesco announced plans to cut 2,300 head office and call centre jobs.

He added: "We recognise these are hard changes to make but they are necessary to ensure our business remains competitive and set up for the future".

"We hope to retain as many colleagues as possible in the new roles we have created and in the vacancies we now have available".

Tesco CEO Dave Lewis cut thousands of headquarters jobs soon after he took over at the retailer, amounting to a reduction of a third of staff.

"This has been a hard decision and we appreciate that this will be a tough time for those colleagues affected by the changes", they added.
