After Profane Remark, Trump Says US Wants Immigrants "From Everywhere"

The Trump administration has already tightened immigration and visa procedures and has banned individuals from certain countries from coming to the United States.

More than 1,700 individuals have been removed from the US for national security concerns since September 11, 2001, a new report from the Department of Homeland Security notes. But the DHS analysis provides no firm figures on how numerous 549 individuals at issue entered the United States through those programs, only providing eight "illustrative examples".

"Operating components" is United States government-speak for the people and divisions who execute an agency's policies (in this case, the Citizenship and Immigration Services, Customs and Border Protection, and Immigration and Customs Enforcement at the DHS). Among that group was Abdinassir Mohamud Ibrahim, a Somali citizen admitted to the United States as a refugee, and subsequently sentenced to fifteen years in federal prison for working to recruit others to the Islamic terror organization Al-Shabaab.

Trump was responding to a reporter who asked if he wanted more immigrants from Norway.

The supposed bombshell report is also significant for how much data it lacks. Chain migration is responsible for about 61 percent of all immigration to the United States between 1981 and 2016.

The DHS report released Tuesday was the result of President Trump's executive order on preventing terrorist entry to the USA, issued in March, The Daily Caller reported.

Among those terrorists, although not included in the report due to the date of his crime, is Times Square truck attacker Sayfullo Saipov, an admit of the diversity visa lottery program who killed eight in November.

In line with that instruction and in addition to the breakdown by immigration status of convicted worldwide terrorists, the report provides information on would-be immigrants whom federal agencies judged to be national security risks. Policy analyst David Bier found in his own research that, since September 11, 2001, only 35 foreigners entered the United States and later committed terrorism offenses.

A Homeland Security analysis said 402 of those, or about 73 percent, were foreign-born. Of them, 335 tried to enter the country by land, 2,170 sought to enter by air, and 49 tried to enter by sea.

Shortly after the report was released, Trump went on to tweet this.

Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen, who presented the report before the Senate Judiciary Committee on Tuesday, said the United States should "continually vet" some legal residents to prevent future terrorist attacks.

The report also found that from October 1, 2011 to September 30, 355,345 non-U.S. citizens were arrested by Immigration and Customs Enforcement for the goal of deportation after being convicted of an "aggravated felony" or two or more felony offenses.

Cabinet-level officials saw the conclusions of the report as evidence that the United States' current immigration regime was inadequate to ensure national security.

Noting the number of naturalized citizens who become radicalized on the list in the Justice and Homeland Security report, Inserra said the bigger problem is with assimilation. Tuesday's report was an attempt by the Trump administration to use government-compiled data to make a loftier, policy-based argument about the president's initiative for a merit-based immigration system.
