Apple partners with Malala to support education for girls

Apple teams with Malala Yousafzai to expand girls' education efforts

Apple is partnering with the Malala Fund to support quality education for girls, with the company becoming the initiative's first Laureate partner. The Fund is led by Nobel Peace Prize victor Malala Yousafzai, and works to help girls get an education.

Apple and Malala Fund, both have been discussing the possibilities of partnership when Malala and Cook met at Oxford University back in October a year ago and discussed how technology could help get more needy girls into education.

With Apple's support, the Malala Fund expects to double the grants provided under the Gulmakai Network and to further extend funding programs around the world. Additionally, the tech giant will monitor Malala Fund's policy modifications that are required to globally help girls complete education. Tim Cook will also join the Malala Fund's leadership council.

Currently, the Malala Fund supports education programs in Pakistan, Afghanistan, Nigeria, Turkey, Lebanon, India, Jordan, and many other countries.

With an estimated 130 million girls out of school, such initiatives have become a necessity. The Malala Fund is trying to reach out to girls, how can we bring these two together to reach more girls, as many as we can, to empower them through quality education.

Since then, Yousafzai has continued to advocate for girls' access to education.

Closer home in India, we have many initiatives that are working on similar initiatives to encourage and ensure girls receive the education, they deserve.

"My dream is for every girl to choose her own future", Yousafzai said in a statement. She added that Apple had "helped educate and empower people" across the globe through its philanthropy and innovation. Some of the biggest challenges facing girls' education are gender discrimination, religious extremism, poverty, and war.

Apple CEO Tim Cook said that it was a privilege to support her work.

When Cook and Yousafzai met three months ago in England, they quickly knew they wanted to work together to better the world. In 2012, when she was 15, the Taliban shot her in the head while on the bus to school. She somehow survived the gunshot, and has since been advocating girls' right to education. In 2014, Malala Yousafzai became the youngest Nobel Peace Prize victor in history.
