Campaigners say Trump's unpopular policies rolling back birth control and equal pay protections are propelling many women into activism for the first time.

One year after President Donald Trump was inaugurated, his critics rallied and organized marches of protests nationwide January 20.

The president took to Twitter to ask women to celebrate the "historic milestones and unprecedented economic success" of the a year ago.

In the US the major march organized to honour last year's event also has its sights set on upcoming elections. Demonstrators held various signs calling for Trump's impeachment, reading "lock him up" and "narcissist".

"Over 200,000 people took to the street yesterday in New York City to fight for the future of their country", de Blasio wrote.

"The women who are faceless".

In New York, a diverse crowd comprised primarily of women descended on Central Park West - the avenue that borders Manhattan's beloved park and finishes at the foot of the Trump International Hotel, which is part of the magnate-turned-commander-in-chief's real estate empire.

In Richmond, Va., the crowd burst into cheers when a woman ran down the middle of the street carrying a pink flag with the word "Resist".

Women's March San Francisco: Saturday, Jan. 20 from 11:30 a.m.to 3:30 p.m. Women carried signs in the marches emblazoned with phrases such "Feminism is my second favorite "F" word", "Girls just want to have fundamental rights", and "Boys will be good humans".

"We have to keep standing up and speaking out against injustice", Palacio said.

Democratic candidate for governor J.B. Pritzker was among the politicians mingling in the crowd around Grant Park.

"I think when women see visible women's leadership, bold and fierce, going up against a very racist, sexist, misogynist administration, it gives you a different level of courage that you may not have felt you had", she said. A group of women wearing red cloaks and white hats like the characters in the book and TV show "The Handmaid's Tale" marched in formation, their heads bowed.

President Donald Trump addressed the Women's Marches a year ago by suggesting that the hundreds of thousands of people who turned out should have expressed their feelings toward him at the ballot box.

Vargas marched at last year's event in NY, an experience she described as "incredible" and powerful. She then emphasized that the U.S. president deserves an F for his first year in office.

"I hope she grows up in an environment where she feels she can speak her mind", Sara said. "Everything is moving toward the right, and we have a president who seems to have no decency".

Couldn't make it to the 2018 Women's March?

More events are planned to take place on Sunday, with celebrities to be a big feature including Eva Longoria, Olivia Munn, Scarlett Johansson, Alyssa Milano, Viola Davis and Cher. From Poland to NY to Washington D.C.to Los Angeles, the protests were unforgettable and showcased the power of women of all generations.
