Attorney: Government plans to appeal immigration ruling

In a meeting between President Trump and a bipartisan group of lawmakers on Tuesday at the White House, the subject of DACA bounced back and forth across the table.

The legislation, according to the Journal article, would allocate funds for the construction of a wall along parts of the U.S. -Mexico border as well provide money for technological advances created to enhance security.

The White House ripped the decision in a statement Wednesday morning, saying that it was "outrageous, especially in light of the President's successful bipartisan meeting with House and Senate members at the White House on the same day".

But in a tweet storm Friday, Trump characterized the "so-called bipartisan DACA deal" as "a step backwards".

Trump's initial response sparked questions around whether he actually knew what a "clean" Dream Act meant, which would not include any additional security or enforcement measures.

"I'll take all the heat you want... but you are not that far away from comprehensive immigration reform", the president said.

"Any solution has to include the wall, because without the wall, it all doesn't work", Trump said.

The source said Senate Minority Whip Dick Durbin was explaining to him a proposal to end the visa lottery in exchange for Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for countries such as El Salvador.

Trump's comments found support from several lawmakers.

Democrats and other supporters of the so-called DREAMers have called for a legislative implementation of DACA to be attached to a must-pass spending bill that would keep the government funded beyond January 19.

Bishop Vasquez said the bishops "stand ready to work" with Trump and Congress "in the coming days to help fashion a just solution that meets their needs, ensures our nation's safety and security, and sets the stage for the larger debate on immigration reform that is so urgently and desperately needed". The ruling, which is certain to be appealed, also said the government does not have to accept applications from those not now covered by DACA.

Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.), for example, said she wanted a "clean" DACA bill - one that addressed only DACA and no other immigration issues. For that reason, a resolution to the DACA issue must be part of a global deal on the budget.

Though Congress has until March to reach a deal, legislators on both sides of the aisle say they're "very close" to submitting a final draft, and may propose a floor vote by next week. As such, it was an unlawful circumvention of Congress, and was susceptible to the same legal challenges that effectively ended DAPA.

"Hold up on that, because we need to see how USCIS will renew their procedure and if the administration is going to appeal and the likelihood is, yes", Aguayo stated. "So we're plowing ahead like we discussed yesterday at the White House".
