Australian Open: Svitolina reveals hip injury struggles

Elise Mertens surprised fourth seed Elina Svitolina in the quarter-finals of the Australian Open on Tuesday, winning in straight sets to make her first grand slam semi-final.

"That was really ugly", Martic said of the heat. You know, I always had the tape, like, a heavy tape under the shorts. I feel mixed emotions, all good emotions. Svitolina tried to take revenge for the defeat two years ago at the tournament in Doha.

The Belgian outhit Svitolina from the back, offered the most shining version of her all court game and suffered a single lapse of concentration when she double faulted down break point while serving for the set.

Svitolina blamed a hip injury for her shock ousting as she again failed to get to the last four of a Grand Slam on her 22nd attempt. The Dane leads 6-2 including a 3-0 mark on hard courts.

"I'm very pleased with the way I'm playing here because it's not the first time I'm going into the tournament as one of the favourites", Svitolina added.

Meanwhile, American outsider Tennys Sandgren's fairytale run at the Australian Open is just what the sport needs to make it less predictable, according to former champion Mats Wilander.

The No. 37-ranked Mertens successfully defended her Hobart International title - she decided previous year to target that title instead of entering Open qualifying - two weeks ago, and has now won five matches at Melbourne Park.

"It's great for Tennys, and tennis", Europsport commentator Wilander told Reuters ahead of 26-year-old Sandgren's last-16 clash with Austrian fifth seed Dominic Thiem. "I'm very happy", said an overwhelmed Edmund, ranked 49 and in his first semi-final at a major. They will be long sets, but Mertens won't win one.

Mertens, who is yet to drop a set, was equally convincing in blasting past world number four Elina Svitolina 6-4, 6-0 to become the first Belgian to get so far since Kim Clijsters in 2012.

She will now face the victor of the match between Carla Suarez Navarro and second seed Caroline Wozniacki.

Wozniacki dropped a mere six points in the second set against the 19th-ranked Rybarikova and said her free-hitting approach was the result of nearly losing in the second round.

He saved all seven break points he faced in the final set - 15 of 18 in the match - then broke Schwartzman's serve in the final game, clinching it on his third match point.

"I feel good. I think being nearly out of the tournament, you have nothing to lose after that", she told reporters. "I'm hitting the ball really nicely, taking chances, playing aggressive, you know, taking the ball as early as I can". "It was a little stressy at the end, but I played my game and it went well today". I want to be better. Mertens stayed, and was soon rewarded with her first WTA title.
