BCCI gives Pathan backdated doping ban

Pathan consumed the banned substance without proper authorisation. Nor he or his team doctor took the prior permission before using the drug

The BCCI banned Yusuf, earlier in the day, for five months after he was tested positive for a banned substance during a domestic T-20 competition in the national capital in March past year.

The final decision on the actual dates for suspension came only on January 8 despite Pathan waiving his right to appeal on October 29 itself.

"There was a substance which was in the medicine which falls under the banned list".

"His urine sample was tested and found to contain Terbutaline, which is prohibited both in and out of competition in the WADA Prohibited List of Substances", it added.

BCCI said in a statement which reads as "Mr.Yusuf Pathan has been suspended as he failed in a Dope Test".

The 35-year-old, who played the last of his 57 one-day internationals in 2012 but has been active in domestic cricket, "inadvertently ingested" a prohibited substance to treat an upper respiratory tract infection, the BCCI said in a statement on Tuesday. However, the Baroda cricketer is still out of the trouble and could face a lengthy ban as per World Anti Doping Agency (WADA) Code. However, the period of his ban may not be WADA complaint. "We haven't received any communication about Yusuf's suspension from the BCCI", said Snehal Parikh, BCA secretary (in-charge).

Wrestler Narsingh Yadav also pleaded "innocent" and was subsequently cleared by Wresting Federation of India (WFI) before the Rio Olympics past year. Reportedly, the samples of Yusuf Pathan were found to have contained terbutaline.

After seeking expert advise the BCCI accepted the justification furnished by Yusuf Pathan and on the basis of that stated that the five-month period of ineligibility shall apply along with the disqualification of some results.

"Competing for India and my home state Baroda has been a matter of huge pride and encouragement for me and I would never act in any manner to bring my motherland or Baroda, in any kind of disrepute", Pathan said in a statement.

Pradeep Sangwan was banned for 18 months when he had failed a dope test in 2013. The board made a decision to backdate it after Pathan's promptly admitted the ADRV when confronted by BCCI, who came to the conclusion that the delays in the results management, in this case, would not be "attributable to Mr. Pathan".

Fortunately for the hard-hitter, his five-month ban is scheduled to end on the midnight of January 14 as the suspension was backdated to August 15, 2017. The Board has refused to sign up with NADA despite repeated requests by the agency.
