BJP anti-Dalit, behind Koregaon riots: Delhi Minister

Chembur

At least two persons, including a 16-year-old boy, were killed in the violence since caste riots erupted in villages around Bhim's Korean near Pune on the 200th anniversary of a battle between British forces, including Mahar troops, and the Peshwa Army. The two organisations had opposed the celebration of "British victory" in the battle.

Moily said it was "most unfortunate" that the Bombay Police never anticipated this kind of very big eruption.

In its daily column, the editorial questioned the capability of the Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis government, which is "not able to control the ongoing chaos in the state". He said it needed to be ascertained if there was a conspiracy behind yesterday's violence.

Fadnavis ordered a Crime Investigation Department (CID) probe into his death and also announced a compensation of Rs 10 lakh for the victim's kin.

A morcha was carried by group of people against Milind Ekbote, who was already booked by Pune police under relevant sections of the Prevention of Atrocities Act and Orchestrating Violence in Bhima Koregaon on January 1. Since then the lower-caste communities have been viewing it as a symbolic victory for themselves. A large section of Dalits view the historical battle as the defeat of the "casteism" of upper-caste Peshwas. He said some "fascist forces" always want to keep the Dalits at the bottom of the Indian society. "Una, Rohith Vemula and now Bhima-Koregaon are potent symbols of the resistance", Gandhi tweeted. In Mumbai, protesters disrupted road traffic in the suburbs and local train services on the Harbour Line. Parts of Mumbai came to a near standstill after Dalits blocked roads in several areas and forced shops to shut. Protesters staged a rail roko in Chembur.

The Eastern Express Highway was blocked for over five hours as protesters blocked it, police said.

Mumbai police registered nine cases on Wednesday in connection with violent protests in the city on Tuesday. Angry Dalit protestors hit the street in several districts of the state, hampering daily life.

The Mumbai Police has advised residents to not believe or spread rumours.

Dilip Kamble, Minister of State for Social Justice said, "I condemn the violence incident and appeal to people to maintain peace". Ambedkar said that the bandh was peaceful. A youth in Nanded died unfortunately.

Saamana advised Ambedkar to not use the violence to fulfill his political agenda and said that a true leader is the one "who gives direction to the crowd and not the one who instigates the violence".
