Cabinet Reshuffle: David Davis keeps Brexit Secretary role

Hoping for a new start Britain’s May appoints new Conservative Party head

UK Prime Minister Theresa May attempted to inject new energy into a government weighed down by Brexit on Monday, reorganizing her top ministerial team with an eye to strengthening the apparatus of her governing Conservative Party.

Speculation remained rife at Westminster that several big names were on their way out of the Cabinet, with education secretary Justine Greening and the leader of the Commons Andrea Leadsom all reported to be vulnerable as the Prime Minister seeks to assert her authority.

Sir Patrick McLoughlin, the outgoing Conservative party chairman, has confirmed that he has left the cabinet.

Brandon Lewis has been named the new party chairman, amid farcical scenes which saw the Tories' official Twitter account incorrectly announce that the job had gone to Chris Grayling.

Toby Young, whose appointment had been defended by senior ministers, said his position had "become a distraction" for the work of the Office for Students.

"No wonder Theresa May's struggling to negotiate Brexit - she can't even organise a reshuffle", tweeted opposition Labour MP Stephen Kinnock.

The reshuffle "allows a new generation of gifted ministers to step up and make life better for people across the whole UK", May said in a statement.

At the same time, it is expected that the Prime Minister will resign at least six members of the government.

May's room for manoeuvre is limited by heading a minority government and the need to maintain a delicate Cabinet balance of eurosceptic and pro-European ministers as major Brexit decisions loom.

"So we take these words by the prime minister very seriously, and it is therefore only natural that in this house we also prepare for every eventuality".

But she got a boost last month when the European Union agreed to start discussing future trade relations with Britain.

May has said she intends to stay in office "as long as people want me to serve", but a year ago saw numerous reports of plots to oust her - and many ministers will have their eye on a future leadership challenge.

After starting the two-year withdrawal process in March 2017, Britain struck a deal in December 2017 on the financial settlement with Brussels, as well as on expatriate rights and the Irish border.

In a surprise development, James Brokenshire, a longtime ally of May's, resigned from his post as Northern Ireland secretary, citing upcoming lung surgery.

Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson, a leading Brexit supporter, is expected to keep his job despite challenging May's strategy previous year.
