Calcutta HC to hear PIL challenging doctorate for Mamata Banerjee today

"It was decided during the senate-syndicate meeting that a DLitt degree will be conferred on Mamata Banerjee for her literary and social work", Bandopadhyay said.

Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee was left embarrassed when journalists accompanying her on a foreign tour were caught flicking steelware while attending an official dinner at a luxury hotel in London.

Speaking at the University of Calcutta after being decorated with a higher doctorate degree during its convocation ceremony, Banerjee said: "Intolerance is rising in the country".

Earlier on Oct 25 past year, following a meeting of the university's Senate-Syndicate, CU's Vice-Chancellor (VC), Sonali Chakraborty Banerjee, announced to award Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee with honourary D.Litt degree during the prestigious institute's convocation in south Kolkata's Nazrul Mancha. History should not be distorted.

She was apparently hinting at the Unique Identification Authority of India lodging a complaint against four persons, including a reporter of The Tribune who had filed a story on alleged breach in Aadhaar database.

Dutta claimed that as such it should not be treated as a PIL and the petition should be dismissed. In his plea, Mukherjee claimed it was arbitrary and devoid of any proper reasoning, reported PTI.

A petition in the Calcutta High Court this week, filed by Ranjugopal Mukherjee, formerly a professor of the university had challenged the university's decision.

Petitioners also argue that serious doubts have already been raised in public domain over academic credentials of Mamata Banerjee including her so-called "PhD Degree" which she herself refrains from using.

Without naming the Bharatiya Janata Party, the chief minister said that there are attempts to destroy the Indian culture of "unity in diversity".

The West Bengal government told the HC that a PIL challenging Calcutta University's decision to confer honorary D.Litt to CM Mamata was politically motivated.
