Catalonia ex-leader Puigdemont arrives in Denmark despite Spain's warning

Update 10am: The fugitive former leader of Catalonia has arrived in Denmark and prosecutors in Spain immediately started proceedings to have him arrested and extradited.

Puigdemont was in Copenhagen for a conference, the first time he has left Belgium since fleeing at the end of October.

He was immediately surrounded by media but made no comment before he got into a vehicle that drove him away to an undisclosed location.

Spain's prime minister removed Puigdemont and his Cabinet from office and dissolved Catalonia's parliament as part of a crackdown on the separatist push.

The Spanish Supreme Court issued an worldwide arrest warrant against him but withdrew it in December to avoid the risk of Belgian authorities granting him asylum.

Mr Puigdemont arrived at Copenhagen airport shortly after 07:00 GMT and was not detained, leaving in a auto.

Mr Puigdemont has travelled to host a debate on Catalonia at the University of Copenhagen.

Exiled former Catalan leader Carles Puigdemont traveled to Copenhagen Monday, despite warnings he could face arrest while in Denmark.

Spanish Supreme Court Judge Pablo Llarena had dropped a European arrest warrant for Puigdemont and four of his deputies who fled to Belgium in early December, saying it would complicate the overall probe into the region's leaders - but warned they would be arrested if they return.

A European arrest warrant was then issued for Puigdemont, and although it was lifted again on December 5, there is still a warrant out for Puigdemont's arrest in Spain.

Spain is investigating Puigdemont for possible rebellion, sedition and embezzlement linked to a unilateral declaration of independence by Catalonia's parliament on October 27.
