CES: Med Tech Innovations to Look Out for in 2018

A power outage left parts of CES in the dark. CNET

The CES 2018 event experienced a blackout Wednesday, putting one of the world's largest displays of tech and electronic devices at a standstill for almost two hours.

Even after the power was restored, companies had to go through the hassle of resetting devices on display - those connected wirelessly with each other, in particular.

"A preliminary assessment indicates that condensation from heavy rainfall caused a flashover on one of the facility's transformers", according to a statement from the Las Vegas Visitor and Convention Authority, NV Energy and the Consumer Technology Association.

Power outage causes attendees to evacuate Central Hall at CES in Las Vegas on Wednesday, Jan. 10th, 2018.

Multimillion-dollar installations from technology giants including Samsung, LG, Nikon, Panasonic, GoPro, Canon, Hisense, and Intel all fell dark, leaving crowds of people reaching for their mobile phones to light the way out.

Power was partially restored around 1 p.m. crews from Nevada Energy worked to restore power to the remaining areas in the dark.

Record-breaking rains hit Las Vegas on Tuesday, leading to flooding and the closing of some major booths, including Google's.

Public service announcements played over an intercom thanking attendees for their patience while the work to resolve the issue continued.

Technology brands including Intel, IBM, ISPN and Texas Instruments were quick to jump onto the #CESblackout hashtag, with many taking a cheeky communications approach to the situation. Both large and smaller ones rely on the annual trade show to ink deals that will translate to cash months in the future; the blackout disrupted some of the product demos, panels and meetings key to those deals. The power outrage, caused by an error with fairly rudimentary electronics, is ironic considering the wealth of next-generation technology exhibited throughout the event. Any tech being shown off at the show that requires an outlet isn't operational.
