Chung stuns Zverev, reaches Australian Open last-16

Chung said afterward that he had a "really tough match" against the older Zverev.

Continuing his seven-match winning streak, Chung crumbled his opponent by 5-7 7-6 (7-3) 2-6 6-3 6-0 and became the first South Korean man to reach the last 16 of the Australian Open.

In this Associated Press photo, Chung Hyeon of South Korea returns a shot against Alexander Zverev of Germany in their third-round Australian Open men's singles match at Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne on January 20, 2018.

German fourth seed Alexander Zverev was thrashed out of the year's first glam-slam tournament by world number 59 Hyeon Chung in the third round on Saturday.

He said what was disappointing for him in his latest defeat was that he felt he was playing well against Chung.

Zverev, for all the hype and victories over Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer in Masters Series finals previous year, has still not gone beyond the fourth round of a grand slam.

"I can't see anything", the German told the official.

"It happened at Wimbledon".

While he won five ATP Tour titles and was one of just four players to beat Roger Federer past year, he has yet to get beyond the fourth round at a Grand Slam. "It happened here. But I'm still young, so I've got time".

"He's 50-whatever in the world".

"When he plays like that, there are very, very few people who will beat him".

No quarter was give in the second set but Chung, who beat Zverev's brother Mischa in the first round after he retired ill, leveled with five successive winning points in the tiebreak.

The lights were duly switched on but once the bespectacled Chung took the fourth set, there only looked to be one victor. The final set took 2 hour, 22 minutes and Halep won on her first match point when Davis hit a forehand wide along the sideline.

The match proved too much for 20-year-old Zverev, who had already begun to unravel in the fourth set, complaining bitterly to the umpire that the lights should be switched on despite it being only 6:00pm in overcast Melbourne.

The lights did eventually come on but they were soon turned off for Zverev as he double-faulted to gift Chung a break in the first game of the deciding set.

Rather than Zverev, Chung could face either Chung or the victor of Saturday night's match between six-time champion Novak Djokovic and Albert Vinolas-Ramos in the quarter-finals.
