Critics' Choice Awards: Gal Gadot delivers powerful acceptance speech

Gal Gadot in Lebanese designer sparks backlash

Gal Gadot was awarded the #SeeHer Award at tonight's Critics' Choice Awards in recognition of the impact her career-and turn as Wonder Woman-has made in helping "push boundaries on changing stereotypes and recognize the importance of accurately portraying women across the entertainment landscape" (per the #SeeHer movement's press release, via Buzzfeed).

Saab has since removed the image, which you can see above.

Last year, Gadot's superhero film "Wonder Woman" was banned from Lebanese cinemas.

Lebanese journalist Heba Bitar was among those to comment, writing on social media: 'I love and respect Elie Saab, but is he really happy an Israeli actress wore a dress he designed?'

Another social media user wrote, "I'm not going to ask why Gal would wear Elie Saab... but I'm asking why his team would post it?"

It may not win any best picture awards, but Gadot's Wonder Woman, directed by Patty Jenkins, became the highest-grossing live action film to be directed by a woman, crossing the $5 billion mark at the global box office a year ago. And that's what makes her real.

It wouldn't be an awards show without an inspiring speech, and Gal Gadot delivered.

Gadot was wearing the dress to the National Board of Review awards in New York Thursday, where she and director Patty Jenkins received the Spotlight Award for their work on "Wonder Woman".

Hailing from Elie Saab's spring 2018 ready-to-wear collection, this simple gown features an asymmetric neckline, cut-out waist and flattering thigh-high slit. "It's about, first of all, equality, and it's about freedom of choice and I think that in this world we should all be feminists and whoever is not is a sexist", explained Gadot. You can steal it right now as this dress is already available to buy! "So although this is progress, but there's still a long way to go", she added.

It was blocked by the government because of the star's nationality and her support for Israel's army, it was reported at the time. Lebanon also bans its citizens from entering Israel. When I started acting, there were very few female-led movies and even fewer female directors.
