Democratic US senator: Trump called African countries '****holes' in meeting

According to those briefed on the conversation, the president used the phrase * a href="***hole-countries/2930875/" *"s***hole countries" while questioning why the USA would accept more immigrants from Haiti and nations in Africa, rather than places like Norway.

Trump did not publicly address the controversy during the ceremony and ignored repeated questions about it from reporters in the room.

A United Nations human rights official also branded the outburst racist. "You can not dismiss entire countries and continents as "shitholes", whose entire populations, who are not white, are therefore not welcome", he said.

United Nations rights office spokesman Rupert Colville said "there is no other word one can use but "racist" to describe Trump's remarks.

"This statement flies in the face of all accepted behaviour and practice".

And what was Trump's response?

"Why are we having all these people from shithole countries come here?" he asked in the Oval Office, reported the Washington Post.

Trump made the remark Thursday during a White House meeting after senators discussed revamping immigration rules, according to the Washington Post.

Several commentators compared Mr Trump's depiction of immigrants from some countries to the treatment that Irish people received in previous times, including MSNBC news presenter Lawrence O'Donnell.

He also took issue with Trumps reported suggestion that the United States should welcome immigrants from places like Norway, whose population is overwhelmingly white, instead of from African countries and Haiti. Graham stated that he said his piece to the president following comments Trump made. "People come here because they're trying to improve their lives, not make it worse", she said.

The Trump administration announced late a year ago that it would end a temporary residency permit program that allowed nearly 60,000 citizens from Haiti to live and work in the United States following a devastating 2010 natural disaster. When you speak about chain migration, it hurts them personally.

The president and lawmakers are in the midst of intense negotiations about how to shield almost 800,000 "dreamers" from deportation.

Durbin's comments came the day after his bipartisan group of immigration negotiators found an agreement to protect hundreds of thousands of recipients of the expiring Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program. "These are human beings, not commodities".

Friday morning, Durbin explained what was happening when he made the controversial comments.

President Donald Trump acknowledged Friday that he used "tough" language during a meeting on efforts toward a bipartisan immigration deal but appeared to deny using the term "shithole" to refer to some countries.

"If these comments are the President's words they are disappointing to say the least", said Scott, the only Republican African-American senator, in a news release.

Trump tweeted Friday that his language was "tough", but "this was not the language used". "Probably should record future meetings - unfortunately, no trust!"

The Trump administration and lawmakers on Capitol Hill are trying to thrash out an immigration strategy ahead of a budget deadline later this month.

He also said that the United States should have more people coming in from countries like Norway.

Democratic congressman Luis Gutierrez called Trump "a racist who does not share the values enshrined in our Constitution".

Some Republicans were also unhappy.

Among those condemning the comments were Hatian-American Republican Rep. Mia Love of Utah, who called the reported comments "unkind, divisive [and] elitist" and demanded that Trump apologize to Americans and nations he so 'wantonly maligned'.

Durbin said "s--holes" was "the exact word used by the president not just once but repeatedly". I have said repeatedly, 'I can't look into Donald Trump's heart and I can't say he's a racist.' I can say now: "Donald Trump is a racist".
