E-cigarettes may be a gateway to smoking for teens, researchers say

The Center for Tobacco Research and Intervention received a $7 million grant from the National Institutes of Health to fund the study. Then they asked if the teen had ever smoked a cigarette. This includes prohibiting all forms of tobacco, cigarettes, cigars, pipes, vaping, and e-cigarettes inside buildings and on campus grounds, entryways, and parking lots and structures, as well as in vehicles.

About 90 percent of adult smokers first tried cigarettes by the time they turned 18, according to the study.

Results: Although electronic cigarettes are the most common form of noncigarette tobacco used by young people, any use of all forms of noncigarette tobacco was associated with a greater risk of future conventional cigarette smoking. Using multiple products further increased the odds.

Among youth in the study who had tried more than one product at the start, 74 percent has used e-cigarettes and 65 percent had used a hookah.

"We've seen the prevalence of youth cigarette smoking decrease over the past 20 years, but the rising popularity of these non-cigarette products is a fairly recent development that poses new questions for tobacco control and youth smoking prevention", lead study author Benjamin Chaffee, PhD, of the University of California, San Francisco, told CBS News.

"Even a little bit of use of these products can get kids addicted", she said.

Oklahoma is spending more to combat tobacco use than most states - but it still isn't close to what experts think is needed. Furthermore, baseline ever exclusive use (ever only use of a single noncigarette tobacco product) was also positively associated with cigarette smoking initiation, with the exception of smokeless tobacco, which was positively associated but not statistically significant (OR, 1.53; 95%CI, 0.56-4.19).

Smoking rates amongst high school students were cut in half in only five years, between 2011 to 2016, when vaping amongst the same age group increased from 1.5% to a peak of 16.0%.

He added that the clear potential of e-cigarettes and other emerging non-combustible tobacco products to addict teens to nicotine has to be part of the regulatory debate, noting that once teens are addicted, smoking cigarettes may appeal to them as a cheaper, more convenient and more effective method for delivering nicotine.

The newly reported analysis of the PATH data was unique because of its large size and the inclusion of both e-cigarette and non-e-cigarette tobacco products in the assessment of smoking risk. The majority of teens who use these products buy vapes and e-cigarettes with these kinds of flavorings, according another study from the University of MI in 2016.
