There were 7,000 confirmed cases of the flu in the United States by the end of November - double the amount from the same time the prior year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

So far this flu season in IN, there have been nine influenza-associated deaths, and 13 long-term care facility outbreaks, the state health department reported. University of Tennessee Medical Center's Jennifer Radtke told the Knoxville News Sentinel last week that CDC is finding that this year's vaccine is somewhere between 10 percent and 33 percent effective.

Nearly a dozen total deaths have been reported in California, North Carolina and SC.

The health department said people should request the "quadrivalent vaccine" that protects against four strains of flu.

Antiviral drugs (which require a doctor's orders) won't totally cure the flu, but they can make symptoms milder and shorter, and they are especially effective if taken in the first 48 hours of illness onset.

Influenza s ymptoms tend to arise pretty suddenly, and can include: fever, sore throat, cough, runny nose, chills/body aches, and headaches, vomiting and diarrhea.

In the last seven days alone 1,111 people have been hit by flu - a shocking increase of 156%.

The Royal Liverpool is among Britain's hospitals which has seen a sudden hike in flu admissions. Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth.

"Continue spreading holiday cheer and not the flu", said Jeffrey Gunzenhauser, MD, MPH, interim health officer for Los Angeles County. In addition to taking the flu vaccine, other measures can reduce or prevent the spread of influenza. Sick rooms can be shared with others who are sick and in households with more than one bathroom, sick people should use one while well people use the other.

Only with this mutated strain the symptoms are much more severe, and if it persists for longer than a week, it's potentially Aussie Flu. From a financial perspective, the increase in hospitalizations and emergency department foot traffic would appear to benefit hospitals, since the flu usually requires low-cost treatment such as rest, fluids and antiviral medications.

A DNA vaccine could instruct a person's skin cells to generate antigens and induce antibodies and T cell responses to fight the flu, according to UW Medicine. Also, the CDC says it is never too late to receive a flu shot.
