Former Patriots Ty Law, Randy Moss among Hall of Fame finalists

The Jaguars' first draft pick in franchise history moved one step closer to the Pro Football Hall of Fame Tuesday.

Nine of the 15 were also finalists a year ago, while a 10th (James) was a finalist in 2016.

Ray Lewis, Randy Moss, Brian Urlacher and Steve Hutchinson are the only four players to make it in their first year of eligibility. Owens was a finalist in each of the past two years but did not make the final cut.

Now, for the third consecutive time, Faneca will be named a Pro Football Hall of Fame finalist.

Randy Moss, a six-time Pro Bowler, caught 954 passes for 14,858 yards and 153 touchdowns during his 13 National Football League seasons, and is one of three players to rank in the top five in National Football League history in receiving yards, touchdown receptions and 100-yard games.

Also worth watching will be Lynch and Dawkins, as the path to induction for safeties has been exceedingly hard.

Urlacher boasts a strong candidacy for first-ballot consideration, though Ray Lewis is also a finalist and considered a lock to be inducted, posing a threat to Urlacher.

The 39-year-old James is in his 4th year of eligibility, having previously been a semifinalist in 2017, one of 15 finalists in 2016, a finalist again in 2015, and a semifinalist in 2014. Beathard, who has been nominated as a contributor, and senior finalists Jerry Kramer and Robert Brazile were announced in August.

The class of 2018 will be announced February 3, the night before Super Bowl LII at U.S. Bank Stadium.

- Alan Faneca, guard (1998-2007 Pittsburgh Steelers, 2008-09 New York Jets, 2010 Arizona Cardinals) The nine-time Pro Bowler and six-time First-Team All-Pro won a Super Bowl with the Steelers. Ward's bid ended in the semifinals for the second year in a row.

The modern era finalists were determined by a vote of the hall's selection committee from among 27 semifinalists. He became a three-time All-Pro and eight-time Pro Bowl center.
