Nicholson's 68-year-old mother, Lydia, went to check on her son but Nicholson started arguing with her and ended up breaking his headset for the video game in an outburst. Paramedics followed and took Lydia Nicholson to a hospital, where she would soon die.

The 28-year-old started yelling while he was playing video games in his bedroom on Wednesday night, police said.

A family friend told Fox40, "I understand that he would've killed the father too, but the gun jammed".

"[She] had so much compassion for people and just wanted to see the best in people at all times", said Autumn Nicholson of her mother.

According to Ceres Police Sgt. Greg Yotsuya, this was the second call in the last six months regarding domestic disputes between Matthew Nicholson and his parents.

The suspect fled to his sister's house in Riverbank after his 81-year-old father, Loren Nicholson, wrestled the gun from him.

Neighbors said the family was friendly.

Matthew Nicholson had only driven five kilometres away, and police pulled him over near a relative's home in Riverbank.

Police located the 28-year-old's auto in Riverbank and took him into custody without further incident.

Investigators are still working to determine what drove this man to kill his own mother.

Nicholson is facing murder charges and is being held without bail.

"Was it the video game", the police spokesman wondered aloud to a local NBC station, "or was there something else going on?"
