He Said, He Said: Lawmakers in Trump Meeting Appalled - Or 'Don't Recall'

President Trump grew frustrated with lawmakers Thursday in the Oval Office when they discussed protecting immigrants from Haiti, El Salvador and African countries as part of a bipartisan immigration deal, according to several people briefed on the meeting.

The alleged comments came during a DACA meeting on Thursday. Sen. The White House later denied he used the word AIDS to describe Haitians.

Just a thought. The White House didn't confirm or deny that he said what he said, but early Friday morning, Trump sent out a tweet to clarify his remarks.

Senator Durbin said that when the discussion turned to Haiti, Trump questioned why Haitians should be given specific consideration. That may be how Trump looks at his own relationships, but the United States will never become great simply by stockpiling other nations' best people. He once said that Haitians "all have AIDS", The White House denied that remark. "I can not believe that in the history of the White House, in that Oval Office, any president has ever spoken the words that I personally heard our president speak yesterday".

Durbin said that's when he told Trump about the numbers of people who hold temporary protected status from various countries, including Haiti.

"We do not recall the president saying these comments specifically", they said.

The U.S. embassy in Haiti, in a Twitter post on Friday, said "we remember and honor the many lives lost 8 years ago in Haiti", in reference to the quake. As for Africa, he asked why more people from "s--hole countries" should be allowed into the USA, sources said to The AP. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., who was in the room with the president, told reporters that the comments were accurate. "Probably should record future meetings - unfortunately, no trust". Trump's comments call into question whether moderate Republicans can really pull Trump to the center on immigration at all.

The United Nations (UN) in a strongly-worded statement said the USA president's remark was purely racist, while the Vatican has described it as offensive.

He later added, "I thought he misspoke, and, as I said, I think President Trump is not a racist, but I do think he is racially uninformed".

UN human rights spokesman Rupert Colville said: "These are shocking and shameful comments from the president of the United States".

"The Haitian government condemns in the strongest terms these abhorrent and obnoxious remarks which, if proven, reflect a totally erroneous and racist view of the Haitian community and its contribution to the United States", it said.
