HUD's Carson: 'We Know How to End Homelessness'

The Department of Housing and Urban Development has given 49 Nevada organizations almost $16 million for homeless assistance. McHenry County received around a million dollars, while DeKalb and DeKalb County received a total of almost 600,000. Long Beach will receive about $8.19 million, Pasadena just over $3.25 million and Glendale slightly above $2.41 million.

This year, HUD is continuing to challenge state and local planners to support higher performing local programs that have proven most effective in meeting their local challenges, often shifting funds from existing projects to create new ones that will have a more substantial and lasting impact on reducing homelessness.

"HUD stands with our local partners who are working each and every day to house and serve our most vulnerable neighbors", HUD Secretary Ben Carson said.

NY received the second most at more than $200 million. That includes a focus on Housing First, which moves people quickly from homelessness into permanent housing, rather than using transitional housing as an intermediate step.

The housing department estimates that the number of people experiencing long term, chronic homelessness, including veterans, has increased.

Last month, HUD reported that homelessness crept up in the United States, with an annual homeless assessment report showing 553,742 people without a home in 2017.

The hike was driven in a large part by the increase in Los Angeles County. Family homelessness increased by 4 percent.

"Continuums of Care are critical leaders in the work to end homelessness nationwide".

According to HUD, its annual homeless assessment indicated temporary and long-term homelessness among individuals edged up almost 1 percent in 2017.
