Cruising at 246/3, the Proteas then wobbled with two suicidal runouts plaguing what had been an impressive day at the office up until then.
South Africa v/s India 2nd Test match will be broadcast live on Sony Ten 1, Sony Ten 1 HD and Sony Ten 3, Sony Ten 3 HD.
Aiden Markram (94, 150b, 15×4) did not get the century on his home ground, he richly deserved, Hashim Amla (82, 155b, 14×4) also did not get the hundred he should have. Their bowlers took 20 wickets, but the only part when we were a little bit better was we got more runs in the first innings.
When they resume on Sunday, Keshav Maharaj and skipper Faf du Plessis will resume on respective scores of 10 and 24 and add significantly on the scoreboard and to give India something to think about. They need to replace injured Dale Styen, with homeboy Lungi Ngidi awaiting his Test debut. With wickets of openers Dean Elgar and Aiden Markram, India made their presence felt but between those two dismissals, there was a trying spell of play with bowlers ploughing without any luck. He richly deserved that century that he did not get in front of his parents.
The India quicks, Shami aside, had been well disciplined, but Jasprit Bumrah was taken for 13 in an over before Virat Kohli wasted a review for caught behind when he thought Elgar had edged Ashwin through to Parthiv. The final session helped bring India back into the game, with four wickets falling in it for 87 runs. His run-out of Amla touched off the collapse late in the day.
India would have been desperate to make further inroads at that stage to get back into the contest, but with Du Plessis and Amla ticking along comfortably, it didn't look likely. If players fit in in the kind of balance we want to go in with as a side then they will fit in.
Amla survived a chance down the legside off Ishant Sharma with Patel getting both gloves to the ball but spilling the chance. After playing a Pandya delivery towards the short midwicket, Philander ran towards the other end without a confirmed approval from du Plessis.
Credit has to go to Hardik Pandya for changing direction in his follow-through, fielding a ball nearly at square leg, turning around and going for and achieving a direct hit at the end that the batsman - Hashim Amla, slower of the two at that time - didn't expect action. Pandya collected the ball and threw at wicket-keeper Parthiv, who did the rest to dismiss Philander. All good bowlers set their batsmen up. By the end of day 1, the equation seems to be balanced between the two sides.
That took South Africa from 246/3 to 251/6, and what should have been a dominant day at the office became one that India will be more satisfied with.
