Intel sets world record by flying 100 mini drones for light show

The Shooting Star Mini is tiny and absolutely safe to fly indoors

Intel announced a partnership with Ferrari North America on Monday to introduce a new version of its video-capturing drones, called "Shooting Star Mini".

Drone light shows have become a pretty popular marketing ploy for companies like Intel, who can show off their sophisticated software platforms required to pull off synchronizations of this scale. Firstly, these drones are smaller than the original Shooting Star model, and secondly, this was all done indoors. A scaled-down version of that system now works indoors, Intel says, making it flawless for conferences, Vegas shows and bar mitzvahs.

Intel did indeed lit the night sky with the squad of synchronized drones. These Shooting Stars are basically self-flying aerial vehicles that use navigation and Global Positioning System sensors technology to avoid crashing into each other. These drones had LED lights that could shine in one of 4 billion colors.

The new indoor flight record follows Intel's own outdoor record of 500 drones, set in 2016 in Germany. Intel says a single pilot can fly up to 100 of them at once.

The drones put on the aerial show at a theater in the Monte Carlo hotel. The song they danced to was Kygo's "Stargazing," of course.

If you're heading to CES, you haven't missed it: the show will take place twice a day until Thursday.

Now even PwC is droning on about drones, it isn't often they get us excited these days - unless, that is, they are breaking records with mesmerising light shows. While not available for consumers, the system, designed specifically for light shows, appears to be expanding to more venues.
