Intel's Meltdown And Spectre Firmware Fix Is Causing Unexpected System Rebooting

"If this requires a revised firmware update from Intel, we will distribute that update through the normal channels", Intel advised. Google has detailed its process for patching its own cloud services like Gmail and Google Drive against Spectre and Meltdown, and it says that it managed to protect against those vulnerabilities without any hit to performance. "Needless to say, enterprise users and hobbyists alike are immensely frustrated by having to choose between system security and system stability and performance, and that Intel isn't being fully forthright with some customers".

The problems affect PC and datacenter systems running the company's Broadwell and Haswell processors.

Huang's comments illustrate how technology sellers from cloud-based datacenter providers to anti-virus companies are scrambling to guard against flaws disclosed last week in chips made by Intel and others. According to Apple, Meltdown will not reduce performance on devices and Spectre was fixed through a Safari mitigation and had no significant impact on most tests.

The notice comes on the heels of a report in The Wall Street Journal that Intel has been quietly advising its customers not to install the latest firmware updates.

Google noted that hundreds of engineers across the company have been working on mitigations for the flaws for the past few months.

Intel said on Thursday it would issue patches for 90 percent of the chips less than 5 years old by Jan 15 and will then focus on providing patches for the older chips.

Earlier today, AMD also announced it will start shipping microcode updates that mitigate the same Spectre flaw. And worse, you may not get patches at the rate you'd expect if Intel is telling system manufacturers not to issue them right now.

Intel has been hit by both Spectre and Meltdown and shares in all three chipmakers have been pushed around by the issues. We believe our GPU hardware is immune to the reported security issue.

"This allows a program to access the memory, and the also the secrets, of other programs and the operating system".

Nvidia has been in touch to clarify that its GPU hardware is not at risk from the Meltdown and Spectre vulnerabilities.
