Iran Says US Is 'Maliciously Violating' Nuclear Deal By Demanding Changes

Trump will work with European partners on a follow-on agreement that enshrines certain triggers that the Iranian government can not exceed related to ballistic missiles, said a senior administration officials who briefed reporters on the decision. Meanwhile, the Trump administration is imposing new targeted sanctions on Iran that aren't part of this deal.

In a statement, Trump said, "Today, I am waiving the application of certain nuclear sanctions, but only in order to secure our European allies' agreement to fix the awful flaws of the Iran nuclear deal".

Mr Trump said United States law must tie long-range missile and nuclear weapons programs together, making any missile testing by Iran subject to "severe sanctions".

Meanwhile, on his official Twitter account, Iran's Foreign Minister Javad Zarif said Trump's decision undermined the multilateral agreement.

Letting the waivers lapse would have violated the 2015 agreement that Iran reached with world powers in exchange for curbing its nuclear program, said the report.

Kaveh Afrasiabi: First of all, a small, yet significant sigh of relief that President Trump ultimately listened to the sound advice of his top advisers as well as the various European leaders by sticking with the deal and not scuttling it as he has repeatedly vowed to do so.

"Iran's response will be severe, and all consequences of this hostile act will be the responsibility of the United States", it said.

In a statement following the signing of the waivers, Trump laid out four conditions that must be met, including increased inspections, ensuring "Iran never even comes close to possessing a nuclear weapon", and that there be no expiry date to the nuke deal.

The 2015 Iran nuclear deal was struck between the USA, under the administration of former President Barack Obama, Iran and five other countries. He effectively gave them a deadline of 120 days, the next time he'd have to decide under American law on whether to waive sanctions.

Under JCPOA, the US relaxed a ban on imports of Iranian luxury goods, such as carpets and caviar, but most USA restrictions on trade with and investment with Iran remain in place, according to the CRS report. "He curried favor with the Iranian regime in order to push through the disastrously flawed Iran nuclear deal", he said.

US officials said the new sanctions were for human-rights abuses by the Iranian regime during its response to civil protests, and for weapons proliferation.

President Donald Trump on Friday kept alive the Iran nuclear deal he detests by waiving sanctions for the third time, but he said he will not grant another reprieve unless the agreement is amended to permanently block a potential pathway for Iran to build nuclear weapons.

Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif accused the United States of making a "desperate attempt" to undermine a "solid" deal.

"I have been very clear about my opinion of that deal", Trump said in his January 12 statement.

Trump wants them to help the United States devise a new agreement created to prevent Iran from escalating nuclear activity again next decade, as permitted under the 2015 arrangement reached by former President Barack Obama.

But the president also promised to scrap the landmark agreement in 120 days if Congress and European allies don't meet his new demands for strengthening the deal - throwing down the gauntlet on a signature achievement of Barack Obama's presidency. Work already has begun on this front, the official said.

In an interview on Saturday with the Iranian Students' News Agency (ISNA), an operation partly funded by the Iranian government, the chairman of the Iranian parliament's national security and foreign policy committee, Alaeddin Boroujerdi, said Iran makes decisions based on national interests and that its ballistic capabilities served as a deterrent.
