Iran threatens to retaliate against new U.S. sanctions

US President Donald Trump was meeting with his top security advisors on Iran sanctions reliefSAUL LOEB

"Trump's policy (and) today's announcement amount to desperate attempts to undermine a solid multilateral agreement", Zarif tweeted shortly after Trump's statement.

The chief diplomat added, "Rather than repeating exhausted rhetoric, USA must bring itself into full compliance -just like Iran".

Iran, too, has been abundantly clear that it will not renegotiate the deal.

"If at any time I judge that such an agreement is not within reach, I will withdraw from the deal immediately", he added.

The United States proposes removing clauses that suggest parts of the deal expire after 10 to 15 years and tying long-range missile technology to nuclear weapons - meaning testing the former would be seen as a similar sin to developing the latter.

Hillary Clinton, Trump's democratic rival during presidential campaign, commented on his remarks tweeting 'The anniversary of the devastating quake 8 years ago is a day to remember the tragedy, honor the resilient people of Haiti, & affirm America's commitment to helping our neighbors. Other protests had been staged in opposition to Iran's ballistic nuclear missile program.

On Saturday, the spokesman for the Iranian parliament's presiding board, Behrouz Nemati, said that the JCPOA is an worldwide agreement that neither the United States nor any other powers can violate unilaterally, according to Tasnim news agency.

Trump on Friday gave an ultimatum to "either fix the deal's disastrous flaws, or the United States will withdraw".

"Iran strongly announces that it will make no measure beyond its JCPOA commitments and will make no changes in the nuclear deal neither now nor in the future", the statement read. He also called on Iran to stay calm and continue to fulfil obligations under the deal.

Under the accord, Iran slowed its nuclear programme in exchange for an easing of global economic sanctions.

Trump has sharply criticized the agreement and vowed to rip it up, but his national security advisors have urged him to wait while they work with Congress and USA allies in an effort to strengthen its provisions.

"This is the last chance", Trump said, pushing for a separate agreement and saying the United States would not waive sanctions again to keep Iran in the pact without such an agreement. The Europeans, meanwhile, have said they are willing to discuss the matter with the US but have shown little enthusiasm with Trump's hard line.

Trump on Friday grudgingly agreed not to reimpose nuclear sanctions on Iran, but warned that it would be the last time he issues such a waiver.

Iran says the nuclear deal is not renegotiable and it will stick to the accord as long as the other signatories respect it but will "shred" the deal if Washington pulls out.

The entities sanctioned include Iran's Supreme Council of Cyberspace and its subsidiary, the National Cyberspace Center, which police the Internet, restricting access to websites that challenge the government.

The United States has sanctioned around 100 individuals and entities involved with Iran's ballistic missile program and other activities which the United States saw as "illicit", according to Trump's statement on Friday. "If Iran does not comply with any of these provisions, American nuclear sanctions would automatically resume".

"Naming and shaming Sadegh Larijani is one small way the USA can bring its human-rights policy and coercive economic strategy against Iran into greater alignment", said Behnam Ben Taleblu, Iran expert at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies in Washington.
