Jeff Bezos writes big check to help 'dreamers'

Undocumented students are ineligible for federal financial aid, including grants for low-income students, and in some states they are also forced to pay out-of-state tuition at public colleges.

The scholarship program will fund US high school graduates with a Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) status, an Obama-era program protecting young immigrants brought to the United States illegally by their parents - commonly known as Dreamers.

Bezos, now the richest person in the world, is donating the sum to The Dream.US, a scholarship program for illegal immigrant high school students protected under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, reports The Washington Post. While Gates didn't begin to build the Bill & Melinda Gates foundation until after he stepped down as Microsoft's CEO, it's possible Bezos could step in earlier - he already sits on the board of the Bezos Family Foundation, which his parents, Jackie and Mike Bezos, run.

According to the organization's president Candy Marshall, Graham reached out to Bezos after the tech titan tweeted his desire to get involved with philanthropy. 2,850 students are now enrolled in college under the program. In announcing the donation, Bezos talked about his father, who was unable to speak English when he arrived in the USA from Cuba as a 16-year-old.

Bezos said his father immigrated to the United States at age 16 from Cuba. "My dad became an outstanding citizen, and he continues to give back to the country that he feels blessed him in so many ways", Bezos said.

Amazon founder Jeff Bezos will help 1,000 "dreamers" go to college. They also must pay out-of-state or worldwide tuition, which often more than three times in-state tuition in more than 15 states. Dreamers receive a total of $33,000 in scholarship aid over four years to help pay the cost of tuition, fees and books.

TheDream.US is co-founded by Don Graham, Henry Munoz and former U.S. Secretary of Commerce Carlos Gutierrez. We expect a 75% graduation rate.

"It helps others in a position to act (like members of Congress) to see the commitment of people in this country to let Dreamers work here and have access to an education", she said.
