Jordan Spieth six off the lead after late quadruple-bogey — Sony Open

Harman seizes second-round lead at Sony Open

Harman, who has four top-10 finishes in four starts in the USA tour's 2017-18 season, teed off early at Waialea in Honolulu, and opened with back-to-back birdies at the 10th and 11th.

Kirk, a four-time victor on the United States tour, nabbed five of his seven birdies on the back nine.

Johnson and Kirk kept clean cards playing on opposite sides of the draw and closed with different brands of birdies on the par-5 18th hole - Kirk two-putted from about 10 feet, while Johnson found a bunker, laid up and hit a wedge to 5 feet. Entering the week, he had top 15s in two of his last three visits to Waialae Country Club.

Harman played in the final group last week and tied for third, though no one was about to catch Dustin Johnson.

Johnson admitted his round was a pleasant surprise, after a bout of flu cost him some pre-season practice time. "I've always kind of felt like as long as there's fairways and green and holes to putt it, then I'm going to be fine".

Kirk, whose most recent victory was at Colonial in 2015, said a return to his old putting routines had paid off on the greens. "I'm just going to show up tomorrow and try to hit the first tee shot best you can and go from there".

The leading duo was one stroke in front of a group of four players on a crowded leaderboard.

Two-time major victor Johnson carded a bogey-free seven-under 63 in the afternoon wave that included a birdie at 18 to grab a share of the lead with early starter Kirk, who stormed into the clubhouse with four birdies over the final six holes. Harman, playing in the afternoon, had eight birdies that included three in a row at the fifth, sixth and seventh.

Peter Malnati, Daisuke Kataoka, Matt Every and Tom Hoge opened with five-under 65s.

A tree-laden quadruple bogey for former FedExCup champion Jordan Spieth has derailed what appeared a promising opening round at the Sony Open in Hawaii.

Schauffele birdied his last four holes and was among those at 8-under 132, five shots behind.

The US PGA champion is without his regular caddie in Honolulu due to injury, but has enlisted Phil Mickelson's former bagman Jim "Bones" Mackay - now an on-course commentator - to stand-in for the event he started with a stunning 59 a year ago on his way to breaking the PGA Tour's 72-hole scoring record.

A birdie on the final hole left him with a 1-under 69, six shots off the early pace set by Chris Kirk.
