Kashmiri militants are our brothers: PDP MLA

Kashmiri villagers and security forces

Aijaz Ahmed Pir, a People's Democratic Party (PDP) MLA, courted controversy on Thursday when he said terrorism in the state of Jammu and Kashmir are martyrs.

"We feel sad when our security forces are martyred as well".

While talking in Assembly, Aijaz said that those who die in Kashmir day in and out are Kashmiris and are brothers, so it is responsibility of everyone in this house to ensure that the youth of Kashmir, be that militant or protester should be saved from being killed.

"Celebrating the death of militants, who were children of Kashmir, can not be justified".

He said the Kashmiri militants are their brothers. The PDP leader, Aijaz Ahmad Mir, further termed it as a "collective failure". He said that the government should sympathise with families of terrorists as well as security forces. If you have noticed we haven't put up a paywall unlike many news organisations, - as we want to keep our journalism open.

NC leader Akbar Lone said PDP is the party of contradictions which on one hand kills militants, and on the other calls them "martyrs", NDTV reported. "Terrorists who are from Kashmir are martyrs, they are our brothers", said Pir. These are questions the BJP and PDP need to answer.

Strongly condemning the PDP lawmaker's statement, Pradesh Bhartiya Janata Party demanded lodging of FIR against the Mir.

BJP MLA from Nowshera, Ravinder Raina, said that "glorifying terrorists is like playing with fire and he will take up the matter with the Speaker and also ask Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti to reprimand her legislator for such a sensational statement".

Union minister Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi was quoted by DNA as saying, "Terrorists and separatists are enemies of Kashmir, Kashmiris, development, and peace".

"They are our children and we should not be happy over their deaths".

"Aijaz Ahmed has insulted the security forces and will of the nation to fight militancy, and if he has sympathy with militants then he should leave mainstream politics, he added".
