Lots at stake for India U-19 colts

ICC U-19 World Cup

India U-19 skipper Prithvi Shaw was on fire today as his 94-run knock helped India reach a massive score of 328/7 in the first innings of the ICC U-19 World Cup opener against Australia at the Oval, Mount Maunganui in New Zealand. Nagarkoti impressed with his pace returned figures of 7-1-29-3 while Mavi too registered impressive figures of 8.5-1-45-3.

It was a six from Shaw which opened the floodgates for India.

For Australia, opening batsman Jack Edwards (73) was the highest run-scorer. The middle-order is likely to be manned by Anukul Roy and Abhishek Sharma, and they would certainly want to make heir presence felt.

India's top three - captain Prithvi Shaw (94), Manjot Kalra (86) and Shubman Gill (63) - each passed fifty in their side's 328-7 while Australia seamer Jack Edwards bagged four wickets.

He did, however, go through a moment of anxiety when he was caught behind off Will Sutherland's bowling.

Shubman Gill then hammered home the advantage with 63 runs off 54 balls with six boundaries and a six. After a watchful start, that saw Shaw play out a maiden, the Mumbai batsman got things going with a couple of fours and then hit a six of Xavier Bartlett.

Like his counterpart from India, Australia captain Jason Sangha has also made a mark in the domestic scene and adding to the tournament flavor will be the son of Steve Waugh, Austin.

However, both Kalra and Shaw missed out on individual centuries. Kalra also walked backed to the pavilion soon after, falling to spinner Param Uppal.

Sri Lanka, chasing 208 for victory, had lost two early wickets after a double-strike from Aaron Cowley and were 51 for three at one stage, before Lakshan's unbroken 157-run partnership with captain Kamindu Mendis (74 not out) took the team through.

For Australia, Jack Edwards was the pick of the bowlers and ended up with impressive figures of 9-0-65-4.
