Microsoft Supports Education with Sub-$200 Windows 10 Laptops

Microsoft Goes After Chromebooks With $189 Windows 10 Notebooks

The company today unveiled new devices and software tools aimed at winning over more schools to Windows 10, which is estimated to have a market share of 22 percent in the U.S. K-12 segment compared with Chromebooks' almost 60 percent.

The news mirrors Microsoft's firstline workers push in September, which saw new Windows 10 S devices starting at $275. The two manufacturers have also each created a new all-in-one system priced below $300.

Sales of Chromebooks-devices that operate on the Google operating systems-have surged in US schools over the past few years, and Google now has 58 percent of the market share for operating systems, according to a recent estimate. The new Lenovo 100e is powered by the Intel Celeron Apollo Lake chip for just $189. There will also be the Lenovo 300e 2-in-1 for $279 offering an 11.6-inch touchscreen and similar spec to the 100e.

JP, one of Microsoft's largest partners in emerging markets will be releasing a laptop and a 2-in-1 device. Microsoft is also partnering with PBS and NASA to expand its Mixed Reality curriculum through the Bringing the Universe to America's Classrooms initiative.

Microsoft Expands its Education Push with New Windows 10 PCs, Mixed Reality, and Office Updates

With all of these new experiences available in time for the upcoming school year, there's never been a better time for schools to try Microsoft Education. The update would be free for everyone using Minecraft: Education Edition.

Affordability is the top priority for many schools. However, Office 365 Education is offered for free in 146 countries and it is being updated to add more functionality.

Without sacrificing the tech features that appeal to schools, Microsoft can compete on price, Salcito argued."We've been focused on solving that, while providing all of the richness that Windows has and continues to offer schools". This will make writing and collaborating with your classmates easy. Microsoft's no doubt excited at the prospect of getting that form factor into young hands as it works to build out the space on the high-end with its Surface line.

Minecraft may be the biggest news for its legions of K-12 teacher and student fans. The software features Teams for collaboration, Learning Tools with dictation, OneNote for note taking, and PowerPoint for recording lessons. Teachers will be able to lock pages as read only in the coming months (their most-requested feature, Microsoft says). The integration will make it possible for teachers to automatically sync the grades of their students on OneNote Class Notebook with the entire school's information system, removing the need for manually adding the grades on the school's system.
