New easyJet boss takes salary cut as airline reveals gender pay gap

Johan Lundgren is a 30-year travel industry veteran and former deputy CEO of TUI. Pic easyJet

"At EasyJet we are absolutely committed to giving equal pay and equal opportunity for women and men", Lundgren said in a statement. That's a 48% increase on the previous year and takes the proportion of easyJet new entrant female pilots to 13%.

EasyJet CEO Johan Lundgren has taken a voluntarily pay cut to match that of his predecessor Carolyn McCall.

Lundgren's annual pay will be pegged back from £740,000 to £706,000 - which is the same amount McCall was paid prior to her departure to head up broadcasting giant ITV.

I also want to affirm my own commitment to address the gender imbalance in our pilot community which drives our overall gender pay gap. easyJet has already gone further than other airlines in trying to attract more women into a career as a pilot. He has now said that to demonstrate his commitment to "address the gender imbalance" he has asked the board to cut his pay to match that of McCall.

Dame Carolyn left the Luton-based carrier to join ITV as the broadcaster's first ever female chief executive.

The UK airline acknowledges that its gender pay gap - the difference in the average amounts earned by men and women across its business - is now 52%.

The gender pay gap comes in because there are far fewer female pilots than male pilots in the industry as a whole - only 4% of commercial pilots are women, and only 5% of EasyJet's pilots are women.

The overall gender pay gap at easyJet is 51.7%.

EasyJet's new male chief executive has cut his annual salary to that of his female predecessor, citing the low-priced airline's commitment to equal pay, the group said Monday.

But we recognise we need to do better.

EasyJet said its average male salary was nearly 52% higher than the average female salary - largely because there are so few female pilots.

The company has set itself the goal of hiring women to 20% of new pilot jobs by 2020.
