North Korea's Punggye-ri nuclear test site showing 'significant tunneling' activity

Punggye-Ri Nuclear Test Site North Korea including the West Portal

There's a significant amount of tunneling activity at North Korea's nuclear testing site, commercial satellite images show, suggesting the area is being prepped for a future nuclear test, according to a report from 38 North, a website dedicated to analyzing the rogue state.

Approximately 100-120 people were seen in the courtyard of the Southern Support Area in seven formations - a rare occurrence, the goal of which is unknown. According to experts at the US-based think tank 38North, personnel are rarely observed in this area of the nuclear test site and the objective of the unusual activity remains unknown.

"Approximately nine mining carts are present at the West Portal, and there appear to be new rails on top of the spoil pile", 38North experts said in a report.

The recent activity at the Punggye-ri nuclear test site comes on the heels of North and South Korean negotiators meeting Tuesday at the Demilitarized Zone.

Tensions between the US and North Korea have steadily escalated since US President Donald Trump took office.

"These [North Korea] officials feared that the USA was already trying to shape the battlefield for a military operation against the North, and that South Koreans do not seem to have grasped the reality that the Trump administration is set on a course for preventive war".

Trump said on Twitter on Thursday that talks between North and South Korea were "a good thing", but the US ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley added that the U.S.

North Korea's leader Kim Jong Un visits the Mangyongdae Revolutionary Academy on its 70th anniversary, in this undated photo released by North Korea's Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) in Pyongyang October 13, 2017. "I hope that doesn't happen", Haley said. However, he did not reveal if he had actually spoken to Kim. It was the first high-level talks between the two countries since late 2015. But North Korea made no promises on its weapons programme at the talks, and lashed out when asked about denuclearisation by South Korean journalists, saying it was not up for discussion.
