Packers expected to have interest in former Bills GM Doug Whaley

Mike McCarthy on what he wants in a new GM for the Packers

Van Pelt, a former quarterback in the National Football League for Buffalo, has been part of the staff under McCarthy dating back to 2012.

Alex Van Pelt was the latest assistant to exit the staff after coach Mike McCarthy said his quarterbacks coach followed through on a contractual decision to pursue other opportunities.

McCarthy spoke numerous times about fit on Thursday during his season-ending news conference. Philbin spent the past two seasons as the Indianapolis Colts' assistant head coach and offensive line coach under Chuck Pagano, who was sacked earlier this week.

Capers has been the defensive coordinator for the Packers for nine seasons, originally joining Green Bay on January 19, 2009.

The list of internal candidates for the Green Bay Packers' open general manager job is well established, but far less is known about potential options from outside the organization.

On defense, McCarthy said holdover assistants Winston Moss, Joe Whitt and Darren Perry are candidates for the defensive coordinator position after Dom Capers was sacked this week.

"When you say you have a standard at the Green Bay Packers, it stops right there".

But this past season, with Rodgers out for a big chunk of it, Green Bay would fall into the 20s in both categories for the first time since 1991. "I'm more focused on the fit of the GM", McCarthy said.

This could possibly lead to a reunion with former Packers' quarterbacks coach Ben McAdoo, who was sacked as the head coach of the New York Giants in December.

Bennett, who played for the team and has been part of the coaching staff since 2005, served as offensive coordinator for the past three seasons. Wolf's father Ron was the General Manager in Green Bay from 1991-2001 and built a team that won the franchise's first Super Bowl since the Vince Lombardi days.

McCarthy lamented the "personal aspect" of the changes, which he said is "what keeps me up at night".

"We've had so much change come through here that I don't think we ever had a chance to develop a team", Clinton-Dix said, per ESPN's Rob Demovsky. Philbin and McAdoo have history in Green Bay. "We have all the confidence in the world in Mike; we're going to have great success moving forward".

McCarthy's 12-year partnership with GM Ted Thompson was highly successful and he's obviously hoping for a similar relationship with Thompson's successor, but he acknowledged the priority is what Murphy is looking for at the top of the football operation.

In this handout image provided by the NFL, Edgar Bennett of the Green Bay Packers poses for his NFL headshot circa 2011 in Green Bay, Wisconsin. Safety Ha Ha Clinton-Dix spoke about the toll that injuries took on defense, and the need for better accountability, as the Packers cleaned out their lockers on Tuesday.
