Pakistan accuses U.S. of betrayal after military aid suspension

The Trump administration on January 4 suspended more than Dollars 1.15 billion security assistance to Pakistan on the accusation of providing safe haven to terrorist networks operating in Islamabad.

The announcement came just hours after Trump in a tweet said the USA has "foolishly" given more than $33 billion in aid to the country and gotten only "lies and deceit" in return.

Ms Nauert said the suspension will remain in effect until Pakistan "takes decisive action" against groups such as the Taliban that are "destabilising the region and targeting USA personnel".

The US State Department has officially cut security funding for Pakistan, saying it will only be restored if Islamabad takes action against the Afghan Taliban and the Haqqani Network.

"We consider them to be destabilising the region and also targeting U.S. personnel".

Following up on that tweet, State Department spokesperson Heather Nauert announced today that the U.S.is withholding security assistance to Pakistan.

If U.S. -Pakistan relations fall off a cliff this year, one of the major points of leverage that Islamabad may choose to apply is its acquiescence to the United States resupplying its Afghanistan-based troop presence through its territory-mainly via port access from the Arabian Sea. Pakistan now will not receive nearly $1.3 billion (Rs 8,238 crore) in annual aid, The New York Times reported.

Earlier, the NSC expressed its disappointment over Trump's anti-Pakistan statement but decided not to take measures in haste in reply to USA accusations.

Haley's statement followed an angry tweet from Trump that the U.S. had been rewarded with "nothing but lies and deceit" for giving Pakistan billions in aid.

"We hope to renew and deepen our bilateral security relationship when Pakistan demonstrates willingness to aggressively confront Afghan Taliban, Haqqani Network, and others who operate from its territory", Nauert said. "We have to develop our strategy cool-headedly, after analysing the both sides of United States administration".

"Trump is disappointed at the United States defeat in Afghanistan and that is the only reason he is flinging accusations at Pakistan", Asif told the Pakistani TV network Geo on Monday.

The Jawans, and high ranked officers in Pakistan Armed forces had sacrificed their lives in fighting war against terror, he said while talking to a private news channel.

They say the insurgents have safe havens in Pakistan's border areas and links to its shadowy military establishment, which aims to use them in Afghanistan as a regional bulwark against arch-nemesis India. Pakistan is a heavily Islamic country, and there are factions there that put pressure on the government to handle terrorists with kid gloves.

She added that Pakistan could review its cooperation with the United States if it is not appreciated. According to a Pentagon report from August 2017, $255 million in military assistance would be withheld from Pakistan if it did not do more to quell the terror networks in the country.

"So we will not deliver military equipment or transfer security-related funds to Pakistan unless it is required by law", she said.

TRT World spoke to Pakistani analyst Madiha Afzal on what affect the latest U.S. move is going to have on Pakistan's anti-terrorism drive.
