Pending charges in 911 hoax introduces swatting into lexicon of many Calgarians

Tyler Barriss of Los Angeles faces three charges in connection with a deadly officer-involved shooting in Wichita

As the LA Times reports, Bariss was charged in Sedgewick County court today for involuntary manslaughter, causing false alarm, and interfering with law enforcement. A fugitive-from-justice warrant filed by Los Angeles County prosecutors says Barriss was charged in Kansas on December 29 with the felony of making a false alarm.

Barriss is now being held in the Sedgwick County jail on a $500,000 bond.

Barriss made his first appearance in a Wichita courtroom Friday afternoon and a preliminary hearing is tentatively scheduled for January 25, according to Sedgwick County Dist. Atty.

Tyler Barriss is read his official charges including involuntary manslaughter.

Late a year ago, Kansas resident Andrew Finch was killed by Wichita police when a frivolous 911 call was made stating that there was a hostage situation at the address of Finch's mother. Just one week before the deadly Wichita call, Barriss reportedly called in a false threat at a Calgary woman's apartment.

Police have said they believed Finch was armed when he moved his hands toward his waistband and then motioned toward officers. According to police, a Kansas City man may have been the victim of a swatting incident resulting from an argument while playing Call of Duty. Finch appears to have no connection to the game or the dispute arising from it. Responding to a realistic-sounding 911 call, Calgary police believed a man had been shot and two others were being held hostage in the home. Barriss was allegedly targeting the home of a young woman he met online, authorities in Calgary said.

Barriss, 25, is accused of claiming to the dispatcher that he had shot his father in the head and was holding the rest of his family hostage.

There is no update regarding punishment for the Call of Duty player that apparently provided Finch's address as his own.
