New Zealand film director Peter Jackosn talks about his latest project, restoring footage from World War 1 for a documentary with the UK's 14-18 NOW.

For the film, the Academy Award victor has restored footage from the war, as well as colorising and rendering it digitally in 3D using modern production techniques. The film is being produced by the director's WingNut Films shingle. The as-yet-unnamed project will have a United Kingdom -wide release as part of the BFI London Film Festival in the fall.

The film is part of the World War I centenary's official program of cultural events known as "14-18 NOW", funded by contributions from the British lottery, the government's department of culture, and the Arts Council. It will subsequently aired on BBC One, where it will be accompanied by a "making-of" documentary with behind-the-scenes footage, interviews with Peter Jackson and an in-depth look at the creative and technical process behind the work. The film will use exclusive archive footage from the Imperial War Museums' film archive and audio from the BBC archives. "I wish I could see it tomorrow". "This innovative new production will bring to life the stories of those who lived, fought and died during the First World War as well as revealing never-before-seen footage from IWM's film archive from more than 100 years ago".

"We all know what First World War footage looks like".

He added: "We have made a movie which shows the experience of what it was like to fight in this war, not strategy or battles".
