President Trump: No trip to London because of embassy choice

No trip to London because of embassy choice Donald Trump

A full-scale visit from Trump - one at the invite of Queen Elizabeth - was expected to bring protests of the USA president in London, but May told ABC News that was not the reason for the delay.

But Trump said his decision, announced in a late-night tweet, was due to the president's concerns about the embassy's move from the tony Mayfair district to a far less fashionable area of London.

Despite Mr Trump blaming his predecessor for moving the embassy from Grosvenor Square, its home for 80 years, the move was actually initiated by the George W Bush administration.

Barrack Obama was, however, president when the modernist concrete building on Grovenor Square was sold to the real estate firm Qatari Diar, owned by the Qatari royal family, in November 2009.

Mr Trump was reported to have been considering a "working visit" next month, however Nigel Farage suggests planned "mass protests" may have changed Trump's mind.

U.S. President Donald Trump is welcome in London and has accepted an invitation to visit, a spokesman for British Prime Minister Theresa May said on Friday, after Trump canceled a trip to Britain scheduled for next month to open a new embassy. "Bad deal. Wanted me to cut ribbon-NO!"

Trump's decision to stay away from the embassy opening is "a great shame" but will not cause lasting harm to the transatlantic relationship, Tugendhat told the Today program.

US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson will now step in for the launch of the new embassy site, which will open to staff on January 16.

"Those desperate to find a symbol of the current American administration in the new embassy in Nine Elms will find one all too easily: it is a squat, fortified cube inside a moat", The Economist wrote.

More than a year into his presidency, Trump has yet to visit London, with many Britons vowing to protest against a man they see as crude, volatile and opposed to their values on a range of issues.

The "strong and deep" partnership between Britain and the United States "will endure" despite Trumps cancellation, a spokesman was quoted as saying by the BBC.

Mrs May controversially extended the offer of a state visit, officially on behalf of the Queen, when she became the first world leader to meet Mr Trump in the White House following his inauguration previous year.

The $1 billion construction was funded by the sale of other properties in London.

State Department releases of the new glass cube have also praised its energy self-sufficiency and miniscule carbon footprint.

Armed police - who are often patrolling crucial embassies and key locations in London - were alerted by members of the public and subsequently discussed the initiative with the organizers on site.

"It seems he's finally got the message".
