Protests Put Spotlight on Iran's Vast and Shadowy Syria War

U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley offered fierce criticism of Iran at the Security Council Friday afternoon, blasting the regime for ignoring its own people and instead spreading "conflict and instability far and wide".

The world "witnessed that (all other) members of the U.N. Security Council spoke about preventing the meddling in Iran's internal affairs", he said.

Russian Federation accused the United States of interfering in Iranian affairs as the UN Security Council prepared to hold a meeting at Washington's request on deadly protests in Iran.

Nikki Haley, the US ambassador to the United Nations, argued the demonstrations were a human rights issue that could spiral into an global problem.

Four UN human rights experts on Friday urged Iran to respect protesters' rights and allow freedom of expression and assembly.

Haley referred to Iran's involvement in the conflicts in Syria and Yemen.

Nebenzia went on to ask mockingly whether the Security Council should have had meetings to discuss internal United States issues such as protests in Ferguson, Missouri, or the Occupy Wall Street movement.

The French Ambassador to the UN, Francois Delattre, said: "However worrying the events of the last few days in Iran may be, they do not constitute per se a threat to worldwide peace and security".

At least 21 people have been killed and hundreds arrested amid anti-government rallies and unrest that began last week.

Going into the second week of demonstrations in Iran, protesters have focused their anger towards President Hassan Rouhani and Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

The United States, which has voiced support for the anti-government protests that have swept Iran over the past week, called for the emergency session.

Britain's media regulator says it is considering an official letter received from Iran's embassy in London complaining about media coverage of the protests. In 2009, the world stood by passively while the hopes of the Iranian people were crushed by their government.

He could opt to re-impose the sanctions and risk collapse of the accord, a move that Friday's United Nations session showed would leave the USA isolated. "We will not be quiet", Haley said, dismissing any attempts to paint the protesters as "puppets of foreign powers".

She called on all of her other colleagues in the Security Council to join her in amplifying the message of the Iranian people. At that point, the elements outside of Iran including instigators based in the United States and Europe began to visible.

For a third straight day, there were large pro-government rallies, this time in 40 locations around Tehran province and several cities including Tabriz and Kerman after Friday prayers, as authorities declared the unrest over.

The U.S. imposed new sanctions Thursday on five Iranian entities over their involvement in developing ballistic missiles.

"We must be wary of any attempt to exploit this crisis for personal ends", Delattre said, after acknowledging the need for the worldwide community to remain vigilant.

Protesters chanted slogans condemning the regime clerics and religious figures, and the government "wasting" their money to support militias overseas.
