Queen Elizabeth Says Wearing A Crown Has One Significant Downside

The Queen returning to Buckingham Palace after her Coronation under the Duke of Edinburgh’s watchful eye. Gems from the Crown Jewels had been buried at Windsor

Precious stones from Britain's crown jewels were hidden in a biscuit tin and buried at Windsor Castle during the Second World War, a BBC documentary to be shown on Sunday reveals.

"What was so lovely was that the Queen had no knowledge of it".

"Horrible", she said of the ride in the four-tonne carriage from Buckingham Palace to Westminster Abbey, where English monarchs have been crowned since 1066.

Letters from Sir Owen Morshead, the former royal librarian to George VI's mother Queen Mary, described the hiding place in detail, The Independent reported.

The remarkable story was unearthed for the One programme by Oliver Urquhart Irvine, the librarian, and assistant keeper of the Queen's Archives. The chamber was accessible by a trapdoor, which still exists today.

In a new documentary airing on 14 January, Queen Elizabeth gives a rare interview and speaks of how the crown she wore during her coronation was exceptionally heavy, so much so that "your neck would break".

The Queen may enjoy the great privilege of wearing a crown, but the extravagant headpiece doesn't come without its downside.

Not even that, though, was sufficient to prepare her for its weight on the day of the coronation: "There are some disadvantages to crowns, but otherwise they're quite important things", she said, elaborating that she learned on coronation day that "you can't look down to read the speech, you have to take the speech up".

Adding on:"Fortunately my father and I have about the same sort of shaped head". But once you put it on it stays. I mean it's only sprung on leather. "It's so heavy", she said.

Meanwhile, the Smithsonian Channel is airing a special to mark the 65th anniversary of Queen Elizabeth's coronation. Anxious that the weight of the elaborate jewels at the centrepiece of her crown would injure her neck, she quips: "So there are some disadvantages to crowns, but otherwise they're quite important things".

The crown was made in 1937 and has 2,868 diamonds and hundreds of pearls as well as the two biggest gems, the Black Prince's Ruby and St. Edward's Sapphire, which were hidden during the war, The Independent reported.
