Rafael Benitez: 'Newcastle United are working on transfers'

It is claimed that the Dubai-based investor have the means to meet Mike Ashley's asking price

The 13th-placed club is yet to sign a player in this month's window.

United's manager wants to strengthen a number of positions to stave off the threat of relegation from the Premier League.

"I talk to Lee Charnley everyday, but no idea (on any budget) but still working".

The Newcastle boss, who ruled out any potential loan exits, said: "We are still working on things".

Asked if Lascelles, who has recovered from the adductor injury he suffered last weekend, could be considered as being on a par with that latter group, Benitez said: "For me, for sure". The hope is that the stand-off between Benitez and Ashley could end now that the billionaire is back in the country.

Newcastle would only have to pay a compensation fee to Toure's BSC Young Boys, as he's yet to sign a professional deal, and this signing would certainly be one for the future rather than providing an immediate boost to Benitez's attacking ranks.

Chelsea winger Kenedy is one target, but Antonio Conte is not yet ready to let the 21-year-old leave Stamford Bridge. But we do not want to sell anyone who will add value to the team and we can not loan out players if we do not have options to replace them'.

Newcastle defender Massadio Haidara has been linked with Utrecht.

Shelvey has been speaking ahead of tomorrow's home game against his former club Swansea City.

Benitez, however, is adamant that midfielder Jonjo Shelvey, reportedly a target for West Ham United, will not be sold to a rival.

"I'm still confident we will do what we have to do but I have to just concentrate on the games".

He said: "The last time we (him and Ashley) talked, we talked about different players and trying to move forward".

Benitez will face the media today ahead of the Swansea game.

It's been another troubled week off the pitch for Newcastle with Under-23 coach Peter Beardsley the subject of an internal investigation over alleged bullying and racism.
