Senate Democrats back bill reopening USA government: Schumer

Washington DC. Lawmakers are convening for a Sunday session to try to resolve the government shutdown

The federal government is reopening almost three days after a dispute over immigration forced it to shut down. The shutdown is expected end later in the day, with the government funded through for the next three weeks, till February 8. "We will make a long-term deal on immigration if, and only if, it is good for our country".

But if no progress is made on an immigration bill, Molly Reynolds, Fellow in Governance Studies at Brookings Institute, warned that "Democrats still have the ability to potentially force another shutdown over the issue". It was read by spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders at a press briefing.

The Republican says the group shared a common determination to keep the government running while doing something about "Dreamers" who were brought to the country as children and are now here illegally.

A fifth Republican, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, voted "no" too, but only as part of a parliamentary maneuver to make it easier to bring another bill to the floor.

At 12:01 a.m. on Saturday the federal government shut down after the Senate blocked a short-term spending bill. Democrats are facing intense pressure from their base to solve the issue over the young immigrants, commonly referred to as "Dreamers", and they are skeptical of Republicans' credibility when offering to take up the issue.

"I think it would be a monumental waste of taxpayer money to build a monument to stupidity, but if that is what it is going to take to get 800,000 young men and women and give them a chance to live freely and openly in America, then I'll roll up my sleeves, I'll go down there with bricks and mortar and begin the wall", Gutierrez said. Democratic senator Kamala Harris of California tweeted her reluctance, calling the majority leader "someone who has repeatedly gone back on his word".

GOVERNMENT SHUTDOWN FELT LOCALLYLocally, the impact of the government shutdown is limited. At the Pullman National Monument, the national park superintendent and senior ranger were sent home due to the shutdown.

The shutdown began Saturday after Democrats derailed a Republican measure that would have kept the government open until February 16. Democrats had attempted to tie protection for Dreamers - some 800,000 undocumented immigrants brought to the USA illegally as children - to the funding bill.

"If he does not, of course - and I expect he will - he will have breached the trust of not only the Democratic senators but the members of his own party as well", he added.

US senators struck a deal on Monday to lift a three-day government shutdown and try to end a fight between Democrats and President Donald Trump's Republicans over immigration and border security.

With elections set for November for a third of U.S. Senate seats and the entire House of Representatives, both sides are maneuvering to blame the other for the shutdown.

"The strategy to shut down the government over the issue of illegal immigration is something the American people didn't understand", McConnell said on the Senate floor.

Republican and Democrat senators have struck a deal to end a U.S. government shutdown.

But even with this agreement, there is certainly no guarantee that Democrats will get a bill that they like on immigration - and no assurance that whatever gets approved by Senators - if anything - will be voted on in the House.

The federal government, as of Sunday morning, remains closed, with no real apparent talks underway to reopen it.

Notably, numerous Democrats who voted against the agreement included a litany of potential 2020 presidential candidates including Kamala Harris, Bernie Sanders, Kirsten Gillibrand, and Elizabeth Warren.

Democrats climbed on board after two days of negotiations that ended with new reassurances from Mr McConnell that the Senate would consider immigration proposals in the coming weeks. The White House said he was in regular contact with Republican leaders, but he has not reached out to any Democrats, a White House official said.
