Sex Offender Allowed To Finish College Before Continuing Sentence

Kaitlyn Casswell

"This does not mean that the university condones sexual violence or harassment, nor does it mean that we prioritize the rights of a convicted individual over the safety of our university community", said Dru Marshall, the provost for the University of Calgary school's provost, according to CBC News.

The university was thrown into the controversy after a B.C. judge on January 4 sentenced the man to 90 days in jail for a single count of sexual interference involving a 13-year-old girl, but also ruled he can serve the remainder of it starting May 4, after finishing his semester at the U of C.

The administration made the comment Thursday in the face of a petition signed by a growing number of people that calls for the expulsion of Connor Neurauter.

The student union has said it will wait for the outcome of that review and encouraged students on campus to seek out sexual violence support services if they need to talk to someone.

Neurauter, 21, pleaded guilty to one count of sexual interference and was sentenced last week to 89 days in jail.

As a condition of the plea deal offered by the prosecutor, Neurauter was told he would be allowed to commence his 90-day sentence on May 4, once the semester was completed.

His father said that his son was treated fairly.

The girl's mother is backing the petition to expel the student.

"By allowing him to go on with his life normally, finishing up his semester at university, it sends the wrong message to victims of sexual violence", Casswell said.

Neurauter is a sophomore at the University of Calgary, studying chemistry.

"There were a number of safety concerns that we took into account in our decision", she said Friday."We know that victims of sexual violence ... may have been triggered by this incident and we were also anxious about his safety, given some of the commentary on social media".

"It's been two years - all of these court dates extended, extended, extended", she told the Calgary Sun.

Kamloops This Week reported from the trial that Neurauter, a former junior hockey goaltender, obtained nude photos from a 13-year-old girl and threatened to show them to her family.

Giving evidence, the girl said at one point Neurauter choked her before handing over a bra as a gift. His choice was meant to minimize the impact on the victim.

The school's Consent Awareness and Sexual Education (CASE) group, however, says it found the official response lacking.

"It discourages victims from coming forward as perpetrators are accommodated and their actions are excused for the sake of not impeding their 'potential'".

Marshall was asked whether the school is aware of any direct threats against Neurauter.

"It's time to review the roles universities play in that discussion ... it's time we came together as a collective to ensure the safety and security of our campuses", said Marshall.

"It is important and significant exactly what kind of offence is involved and whether there is a significant risk to any other students. We are also anxious about his safety, given some of the commentary on social media and so we have advised, based on all of our assessments that he should not return to campus this term".

"It's about providing justice to all concerned in this very hard situation".
