Spartak Moscow Condemned By Anti-Racism Groups For Offensive Twitter Post

Russian champions Spartak Moscow published a racially-charged tweet on Saturday that sparked outrage in the global soccer community as the country prepares to hold the World Cup.

The club tweeted on Friday that Spartak player Georgi Dzhikiya would be taking over the official account though it is unclear if the defender wrote the video's caption.

It is not the first time this season Spartak have found themselves at the centre of racism claims.

The tweet came from the club's official account and shows Spartak trio Luiz Adriano, Pedro Rocha and Fernando stretching in the United Arab Emirates sunshine.

"It is a reminder that, along with the whole of football, there is significant work to do to eradicate racism of all forms from the sport".

The incident comes just six months before Russian Federation hosts the World Cup, and is the second alleged incidence of racism in which the club have been involved this season.

Spartak have already been punished by UEFA for racism this season having been fined £33,000 for offences committed by their fans during a Champions League tie against Liverpool in October.

"For Russia's biggest club to tolerate and then celebrate racist references of this kind is wrong", said Piara Powar, the head of European anti-discrimination organisation Fare network, in comments carried by the BBC.

Leonid Mironov, the club's youth-team captain, was last month charged with racist behaviour towards Liverpool's Rhian Brewster during a UEFA Youth League match.

Russian Federation host the 2018 World Cup finals in June but some players have raised concerns over their suitability given that racist incidents remain commonplace in the country's domestic league.
